Many agro-investors have fallen victim of their own ignorance
or greed to quickly multiply their resources. This is because the enticing
words of many farmland sellers and farm consultant pushed them into making sincerely
wrong decisions.
Farming has never been a less lucrative business, it only
becomes dangerous when best practices are not engaged in. These best practices
starts with the choice of crop to plant and the most suitable place (in terms
of soil type, weather and the climate) to plant them. There are many investors
who had met with discouragement all because of this simple initial mistake.
Let me share for instance drought-resistant crops like
groundnut, cowpea, cashew, potatoes etc will do well in the rain forest but
will thrive better in areas with lesser rainfall. Plantain, cocoa, oil palm
should not be considered in commercial quantity in those areas with lesser rainfall.
Cashew, another commodity that has never stopped rising in
value does well in the less rainfall areas like Ogbomosho and with a chance of
INTERCROPPING with some drought-resistant crops like potatoes or groundnut or
soya, profitability is as sure as ones name.
Interestingly in this areas, land are ridiculously cheap and
so the labours. The demand for crops from this areas are overwhelming especially
the major one i.e. CASHEW. The cost of maintenance is low and can survive with
little monitoring. This makes it suitable for working professionals.
Finally the rate of return on investment is amazing as you
can break even on investment in two years or even less.
